JK joinery Branding...

As I was enjoying branding, identity and layout I took up another opportunity of earning commission for designing a logo, business cards, T-shirts and Van magnetic signs for a local joinery firm. The skills learnt from placements I put into use. I had an informal meeting to get a brief and produced a quality design in a few hours, also contacting printers and a signage company about prices. Proving to myself that I benefited much more from my placements than I thought.

Although I had finished my placement after 8 days they asked me to work for them at home, and kept in touch and updated with further design work for them. The main project they wanted me to do was their annual magazine, this allowed me to work a lot with layout and also with Indesign, which was a weakness before. The magazine not only developed my software skills but it allowed me to interact with the client and in turn I noticed considered my audience so a lot more when designing. This is another aspect that I feel has improved my designs, as I felt I could be more playful with the design layout as it had to be more interactive to keep the children interested.

I have been working at Lemon Zest for a while now and I have had some great opportunities that I have learnt from. I feel so much more confident in myself!

While there I got the chance to see how the invoices and quotations were set up and organised, and contact printers about costs and clients about jobs as well as doing some design work. All these aspects gave my confidence a boost, as I had to contact people and sound like I know what I was doing!
In which my most enjoyable job was organising a event, for which I had to contact big companies such as Nintendo, HMV, JJB, Game and Sport England to convince them to participate and loan out such things as Wii boards, Games, Hold training and activity day as well as donate free months membership t the Gym, Gift vouchers etc…as well as deigning the branding.

From this I gained so much confidence and tact from speaking to people, definitely improving my organisation skills and my branding skills. Other aspect that I improved were software skills in Quark, Indesign and Printing terms and costs, as well are more practical skills such as communication, considering my audience, working in a team and how to produce quality designs a faster to meet deadlines. (Well trying to!...sure Julian would have would agree more with trying to!) Everything that I think I will benefit from in the future.

Wildern Experience

I took up the opportunity to have a placement with a graphic Design company based in a high school, so not only contending with the demands of the school but also working on outside projects! It was a strange way of learning how to work with clients as it was very hands on, as the main clients we worked for were based in the school and therefore knocked on your door to see the development of the designs. Also getting the opportunity to work with children was a nice way to see what they think!

We had sessions teaching 12 year olds After Effects and Flash, also the art of making Characters with Plasterscene! I really enjoyed the hands on experience.

I believe that I have also found out more about myself. I thoroughly enjoyed on working on layouts and branding. One obstacle I have to overcome was working to a very specific brief, with the other designers and client having their own design opinions, and having to incorporate them in the deign work. However in a good way in pushed me out of my comfort zone and enabled me to work to very specific design and still have some of my style in the design.

While in Portsmouth for the Placement with Wildern I got the opportunity to do some branding designs for a Book cover, Cd Cover and Newspaper Article. I thought this might be a great opportunity to put my design skills to the test. They held a very open brief and were open to ideas, this I believe is where my researching skills came into use, as they enabled me to produce appropriate deign ideas that they were happy with. I learnt how to speak to clients and how they love to be kept so up to scratch with what you are up to. This I think helped me get more organised and learn how to be more vocal!

Summer Experience;
I can't express how excited I am about this! After searching for a company i like and that would take me i have found an amazing opportunity, slightly intemedated and frightened, but I must have done something right. They are a company based in Lowton and do work that is right up my street.

Re-branding myself

I decided to take the time to re-brand myself and create a form of Branding package that I would be able to post out to companies.
I decided on an appropriate font and layout that I was happy with, keeping in mind the fact that I wanted it simple.

I became attached to the idea of a circle shape to base as the logo and experimented with the layouts of the idea of circles, applying the design to my C.V, letterhead and business card to see the design in context.

The final set that I chose; although chosen for now, I feel that there are some changes I want to make at a later date.

I believe strongly that the work i have chosen to present in my portfolio suggests that i am a designer with a wide variety of skills available, i also wanted to show the skills that i feel are strongest, such as print based work. But also showing that i have acquired skills to work with Animation. One disadvantage of having a well rounded portfolio is that am main interests are not clear. i think that this is something i need to adapt, but i feel that third year offers me this opportunity.

Throughout this year i feel that my interests have changed some what. I am still interested in Packaging. But i am now keen on looking into branding and logos. Recently i have become more curious about information graphics. I feel that over summer i need to research and continue with my own design briefs to know what areas i am most interested in for third year.

Companies that i feel i have been influenced by, or spurred on by are Love Creative - a company that i am unable to have a placement with as they only accept graduates, but am working on a visit to the studio and a chat about their company and their opinions on my portfolio. I feel that i would benefit from this as their work is varied from information graphics to branding, Websites, animation and printed based work. I would love their opinion on my work as a designer.

Another company is I'm your art director. The most influential work that i have seen from them is the Sainsbury's organic range of packaging and the Dr.Stuarts Tea and the Poppets sweet packaging. I feel that an opportunity with a placement involving packaging might be the encouragement that i need.

The last placement that i have secured is one based in a company that works for Schools around Portsmouth. I have chosen to accept this opportunity as they are very open minded to the work that they develop. The work on briefs from Print based prospectuses, to year books and event promotions to other things such as digital Websites and Animations. I think that it might benefit me as i am still unsure of my main interest and main focus for the third year.

I feel confident in looking into agencies rather then freelance designers as after Innovation and Enterprise i feel that i do have more confidence to start my own business, but i don't want to miss the opportunity of working for company's as i feel that it will be something of an experience.

To fit into my aim of working with an agency or a company in design i thought to be productive and to utalise my placements to their fullest i would base m dissertation around the opportunities in design companies. My title

I feel offers me the opportunity to research into depth about what opportunities lay ahead for a woman in design business. In addition i feel that it opens up my designer knowledge on what other designers are out their that i could use as influence.

I think that a weakness in my own intentions s that i feel i have not utalised each brief enough to relate it to something specific, although a disadvantage i intend to conduct live briefs throughout the summer to help me sat focused for third year but to also help me to design more to my interests and aims for year three.

Skills i am aiming to develop is my confidence in shorter briefs, logo and branding and to develop packaging designs related to how i would like them. My aim to help me develop these is to design me in a Box, for packaging. Develop myself a logo and business card etc...and to look into creating me as a brand. I am also hoping that these aspects will fill in the gaps in my Portfolio and i can use these in third year to find a Job or further work placements.

Presentation - End of Year two....

Throughout this year I would say that the most noticeable aspect to me personally would be the volume of confidence that I now have and work with. This is a quality that I feel has held me back before.
As a brief at the start of the year I would say that this might not have been as successful as I had hoped in terns of the layout designs. And it was something I knew I had to improve. Also teaching me that I can’t afford a slow start in the third year so giving me an aim for the summer. One positive aspect is that it taught me a lot on printing methods, something I have not considered a lot before., and something I have found that work experience are impressed by, so opening new opportunities to me.
A main improvement of my designing this year I feel started in the good brief. When developing the idea I kept my aim in mind and with this I developed a very relevant design piece, an aim from the first year. Also in my development including stocks and printing costs which I had never considered as development before, although creating one disadvantage, that I spent too much time producing rather than developing thoroughly. A disadvantage but it was something I carried with me throughout the coming briefs.
The Animation brief was the most challenging and daunting for me, and despite the fact that I said that I have learnt a lot it was opposite of everything I had gained confidence in. I saw this as an opportunity to start from scratch, so I ploughed a lot of effort into learning how to use the software. My strengths started to show in the development, research and the organisation of my work, as my idea developed and changed drastically. It is something that I would have ruled out before, but now I aim to keep this in mind.
Music in the mountains is a brief that opened my eyes to my design skills. I developed a skill to design and develop a logo that was appropriate to the subject in a day. The only thing I need to adapt is the time I seemed to waste on unnecessary researching, which was too much for a one day brief.
Even after last year, I hold little confidence in group projects. I dislike the fact that I have only some of the control, this is a major aspect that I need to adapt to. Although there are benefits such as organisation, planning and communication skills, which I did reap the benefits of. Its just a case of me adapting.
Another major skill that I feel I have gained is improving my use of typography. It was a brief that I was excited about doing as I had the desire to develop the skills I needed to improve the quality of all my print work, and I wanted to understand the terms and rules of how use it successfully. Which I think I achieve well.
The Choice in briefs offered me the opportunity to focus in on areas of work that I a particularly interested in. I found that I really enjoyed all three briefs, although I had to adapt to juggling three briefs at one, which was a hard thing to do. Planning, organising and Lists became a necessity for me to stay on track, and looking back on other work I think that they might have improved with better time management, like these did.

Another aspect that I hope to carry on was when a few of us decided to hold a mini crit for feedback, I think that I need to communicate my ideas with the people around me more, so that I can improve my designs. I found that I enjoyed the Sainsbury’s brief the most and found that it was something I had done little of throughout the year, Hand Illustrations. My aim was to bring in Type, layout and other skills I had developed to help create an impact statement. Also considering my old experiences in spending too much time on production I tried to avoid this.
Wagamamas brief is one that I chose due to the promotion being a challenge to me. I wanted to avoid the cliché of promotional posters and leaflets, creating a relevant and useful design that was appropriate to the companies eat out service.
Homebase simply chosen as it was packaging something I have an interest in but never truly focused on, however if I was to do it again I believe that with more time I could have developed the designs more, which I feel that it needed.
Amongst all of the design work, I would say that business taught me a lot and opened up my mind to starting a business. From this I feel that I walked away with more direction for after this course, my aim is to start by working for a design agency. With this in mind, I decided I needed to research possibilities that might be open to me in agencies. I thought that a positive way to do this would be to work this into my Dissertation topic.

To gain further understanding of the possibilities open to me, for research for the Dissertation and for my own design development in PPD I have been working on placements, I have one secured placement in a company based I a high school in Portsmouth. It was a company that started for the school but developed into a company that is available to all schools. I have chosen to take this placement as they work on everything from Print based prospectus, year books and event promotions to Animations and websites.
I am currently in touch with Love creating about a day visit to the studio in Manchester and also Synergy Design Company in Bolton. With the aim of contacting more one I have secured dates at these studios. As I am very keen on a commercial based placement too.
Third year seems a daunting prospect for me. I feel that currently my interests are still varied. However, I feel that I succeed best in Print based design and am most interested in Branding, Packaging, layout and typography. But I don’t want to loose my abilities in screen-print and animation. So this is something I need to consider.

At work on Sunday i was approached by a guy who wanted a logo designing for his new business, which effectively is a Food delivery Van, for this he said that he wanted a logo for the van and the menus.

This task was a very different one for me, as i had so many ideas but he gave me a specific deign and company name that he ha in mind. I created his designs and a few of my own.

These are that ones he liked, one of which he had asked for specifically, with the cartoons running and the colours, but the last design was on of my own that i had created.

For part 2 of Design Practice, we have to choose 3 briefs from past award options. These from D&AD YCN and ISTD . I have chosen Sainsbury's from YCN, Wagamamas also from YCN and lastly Homebase from D&AD. These all appealed to me as they are packing and promotion, this is what i have wanted the time to do. I have said that packing is something i am very interested in, and this is my time to see if i am any good at it. i am looking forward to this Challenge.

I know that recently i have been looking at a lot of illustrations, i do like them but i am restricted as i can't draw that well. Or either i don't have the confidence to draw that good. But this is something i like due to both, the illustrations, type and the layout. It's not perfect and if i was to re-design it i would play with the type. This is about the Spanish SANT JORDi, which it the equivalent of our St. George's day. The men are to buy a Rose for the woman and a woman buys a book for the man. When i asked what this was about the only spanish i could understand was that this day is bigger than Valentines day and it is a day where everyone is off and the streets fill. This, was very evident when trying to walk down the main street. But i loved the banners, posters and all the illustrations that were around the city.

As i have chosen to promote of one of the live briefs, i chose to look at some existing promotion. Illustrations make this piece very attractive and the use of colour adds an element of fun and character. The seems to be produced to a professional standard too, which is something that i am working towards more and more within each brief.

The only thing that i m personally not too sure about it the type used, by this i mean the fonts. I think that it nice and fits that they are hand drawn and very characterised and decorative but i do think that they could work better with something else. It is not something that i would use or produce. But i do find them visually interesting.

I would have loved to design an alternative easter egg packaging, they annoy me so much! I would like to see some different designs and some originality within the designs! I didn't purchase an easter egg, but i did pick up this designed leaflet, i cant decide weather i like it or not, but i do like the use of colour and the fact that the audience is clearly children and this has been thought about. I think that the appealing aspect of this is the handmade design that it represents, its seems more friendly and personal feel about it.

i was look flicking through some of the don't panic designs for the Word 'Change', these are two i would have voted for, they are the two that i would have thought to be the best, which i don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but i do like the simplicity on the first and the use of colour and then the illustrations, not necessarily for the word change, but the visual standard of the piece.

This was a one day brief that we did as part of a competition for a Spanish festival called music in the mountains. It is based on a classical music event for a local society, but considering the fact that it is a international event.

I don't know what this obsession i have with gathering the things i like, but i borrowed this from Pizza Hut just as i got distracted by the type....i can't even eat without looking for Design!

But i just thought that it was a very bold Design. Although not all the same fonts are continued on other menus but has the same style. It's nice to see that they have found some other complimentary fonts that work well inside and in other menus..

I found these when i was searching for Multiculturism Now, i would like to add what they are for but when i looked at the site i was couldn't understand what they were for as it was described in a different language. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
This module for me has been about regaining the old skills that I have gained and pushing them to the maximum, old skills such as time management, organisation, Aims and keeping focused and clear about my message. However even with using these old skills I feel that they have developed, as I have learnt that I can, when I put my mind to it focus my time more efficiently, this might not have been as apparent at the start of the module, but I have developed these skills when working on colour and design for print together. I think that time management skills have also helped me to learn a bit more about myself too, as from this brief I think that I have worked best and focused more when I have had to plan and organise time, therefore less time to waste so I am being more decicive.

Other skills I have learnt is to screenprint and Letterpress which when using in my brief, I found made the development process much more interesting and allowed me to become more passionate about my work. So learning a new set of skills and applying it to my own designs, making me think about the constraints of that method and work to it. Which I think will help me later in life as there will sometimes be restrictions, weather it be size, weight, colour, and I will have to respond to them effectively.

New skills that I have learnt this module are mainly from either colour or printing methods. I have developed knowledge about colours, which enables to work and print my work off so that it prints as I mean it to, which I think will benefit my work from now. This I have hopefully shown in the colour Dps’ that I have produced.
In addition, the printing, this for me has been the most beneficial as now a print out is just something that I take for granted, it has now become a part of my own work, this opening up outcome of design for me. This to I feel will also benefit me more later in life. But as for now, screen printing method really helped me to boost my project and showed me that I did have the time to explore more hands on variations.

What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
I feel that I have learnt from this last brief that I have to be much more decisive, I wasted a few too many days deciding on what was good to me, rather than being productive about it. However, I realised I had ideas but they were getting muddled up as I wasn’t be visual and writing them down, and not being afraid to go off on a tangent. This is something that I now know I need to take forward with me so that I allow myself more time to work on development or product, this possibly the time I need to move from a nice design to an effective one.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
The strengths that I feel I have now are obviously working with colour and different printing methods, even though I haven’t experimented with them all I understand and I am aware of them. Also the I feel that research is a strength, both primary and secondary, although they haven’t been the strongest in this project my design and my developed ideas have stemmed from the initial research that I have conducted.
However in this module I think that I found a strength that I was unaware of, my development work within the design for print really surprised me, and showed me that once I get passionate about a project I have the ability to create and explore effective work. The quantity of trials helped me to produce a design I was happy with.Also the quality of the final design has improved from that of last year.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
I think that a clear weakness within this module is the length of time it took me to choose a focus. I need to be more decisive and visual with work like I discussed above. However also with all aspects of my work this will benefit me. Also how I start each brief, needs to be short sharp decisions as this will help me create broader design ideas.
I would also not liked to feel rushed at the end of the brief. Although I am proud as this was better than last year but I still would like improve.

Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
*Make a Visual start straight away. Stop thinking about what I should do and get it down on paper.
*Allow more time for printing and final presentation of work. As it is just as important and should be timetabled in with the rest of the work.
*Although I think I did well with my time management I think that I would like
to have a written copy that can keep me in check, just so that I am totally organised and know my deadlines! So I can finish with time left if I need to edit anything.
*Try and make sure that I make the most of my crits as that is one aspect that I would like to take advantage of, for opinions and questions and not be unprepared.
*Try out more varying designs and don’t be afraid to go off on a tangent, it could prove more interesting than the idea at that current moment in time.

My initial ideas were to work on producing an information pack on why is it good to work in a pub, looking at what the job entails, the duties and top tips for Bar people. I was able to find top tips on most of the Breweries website, however i found this on the coco-cola website while i found really inspiring. It is the Perfect Pour, which is one of the first things you learn as a Barmaid.

We have also had our introduction to colour and are now reading up on the methods of colour.

The two that i knew a little about were RGB and CMYK, i found some simple images to show the difference between the two models. RGB being Red, Green and Blue and CMYK being Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and lastly Black.

We are also looking at other printing methods, there are 4 different ones that i want to look into first. Rotary printing is the first one that i want to look at, within this there are three main different types;

Offset Lithography, It is by far the most common form of commercial printing.
The basic principle on which it works is that oil and water do not mix. A litho printing plate has non-image areas which absorb water. During printing the plate is kept wet so that the ink, which is inherently greasy, is rejected by the wet areas and adheres to the image areas.

Rotogravure which is better known as Gravure uses copper plates and prints mirror images the ink directly to the paper. The advantages of this process are that the plates are very durable but also expensive.

Flexography shortened to Flexo uses rubber polymer plates with a raised surface to which the ink is put ontop of. It uses an ink reservoir. A mirror image is used applies the ink directly to the paper in the feed.

Screen printing uses one to seceral woven mesh screens to create the image. As the ink is forced through the mesh where the image is and leaves it printed on the paper underneath. The screen print machines mean that a very presise image is created and many colours can be produced. Also good for mass production.

Pad Printing is a method upon which a balloon like pad silicone pad is
Used to collect ink and then mould around the 2d or 3d object.
This method can use more than one colour as it is a fast setting ink that
Is used. For example, see video.

Digital printing uses codes to produces digial images on surfaces. Also uses spots of colour to create the image. This process uses no little physical process and is more cost effective.

We have started the second year as so far we have been looking at colour4print. This involves using our summer work, where we were looking at two complimentary colours and working with them in an ares of our choice. This i chose to look at branding. We were then asked to select 6 images and work on a "punch line" that fits our area of focus.

These were the six images that i chose to work with at that point.

A this point i had a series of line that i wanted to fit with these images. An example of a few of these are, branded, branding out of context, corperate identity and lastly Rebranded.

I have chosen to stick with Rebranded, as a running theme for this print.

The Definition Of Graphic Design.

The term graphic design can refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation. Various methods are used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may utilize typography, visual arts and page layout techniques in varying degrees to produce the final result of the project. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.

Common uses of graphic design include magazines, advertisements, product packaging and web design. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design especially when utilizing pre-existing materials or using diverse elements.

Suppose you want to announce or sell something, amuse or persuade someone, explain a complicated system or demonstrate a process. In other words, you have a message you want to communicate. How do you “send” it? You could tell people one by one or broadcast by radio or loudspeaker. That’s verbal communication. But if you use any visual medium at all—if you make a poster; type a letter; create a business logo, a magazine ad, or an album cover; even make a computer printout—you are using a form of visual communication called graphic design.

Graphic designers work with drawn, painted, photographed, or computer-generated images (pictures), but they also design the letterforms that make up various typefaces found in movie credits and TV ads; in books, magazines, and menus; and even on computer screens. Designers create, choose, and organize these elements—typography, images, and the so-called “white space” around them—to communicate a message. Graphic design is a part of your daily life. From humble things like gum wrappers to huge things like billboards to the T-shirt you’re wearing, graphic design informs, persuades, organizes, stimulates, locates, identifies, attracts attention and provides pleasure.

Graphic design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas. The designer works with a variety of communication tools in order to convey a message from a client to a particular audience. The main tools are image and typography.

Image-based design Designers develop images to represent the ideas their clients want to communicate. Images can be incredibly powerful and compelling tools of communication, conveying not only information but also moods and emotions. People respond to images instinctively based on their personalities, associations, and previous experience. For example, you know that a chili pepper is hot, and this knowledge in combination with the image creates a visual pun.
In the case of image-based design, the images must carry the entire message; there are few if any words to help. These images may be photographic, painted, drawn, or graphically rendered in many different ways. Image-based design is employed when the designer determines that, in a particular case, a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.

Type-based design In some cases, designers rely on words to convey a message, but they use words differently from the ways writers do. To designers, what the words look like is as important as their meaning. The visual forms, whether typography (communication designed by means of the printed word) or handmade lettering, perform many communication functions. They can arrest your attention on a poster, identify the product name on a package or a truck, and present running text as the typography in a book does. Designers are experts at presenting information in a visual form in print or on film, packaging, or signs.

When you look at an “ordinary” printed page of running text, what is involved in designing such a seemingly simple page? Think about what you would do if you were asked to redesign the page. Would you change the typeface or type size? Would you divide the text into two narrower columns? What about the margins and the spacing between the paragraphs and lines? Would you indent the paragraphs or begin them with decorative lettering? What other kinds of treatment might you give the page number? Would you change the boldface terms, perhaps using italic or underlining? What other changes might you consider, and how would they affect the way the reader reacts to the content? Designers evaluate the message and the audience for type-based design in order to make these kinds of decisions.

Image and type Designers often combine images and typography to communicate a client’s message to an audience. They explore the creative possibilities presented by words (typography) and images (photography, illustration, and fine art). It is up to the designer not only to find or create appropriate letterforms and images but also to establish the best balance between them.

Designers are the link between the client and the audience. On the one hand, a client is often too close to the message to understand various ways in which it can be presented. The audience, on the other hand, is often too broad to have any direct impact on how a communication is presented. What’s more, it is usually difficult to make the audience a part of the creative process. Unlike client and audience, graphic designers learn how to construct a message and how to present it successfully. They work with the client to understand the content and the purpose of the message. They often collaborate with market researchers and other specialists to understand the nature of the audience. Once a design concept is chosen, the designers work with illustrators and photographers as well as with typesetters and printers or other production specialists to create the final design product.

Symbols, logos and logotypes Symbols and logos are special, highly condensed information forms or identifiers. Symbols are abstract representation of a particular idea or identity. The CBS “eye” and the active “television” are symbolic forms, which we learn to recognize as representing a particular concept or company. Logotypes are corporate identifications based on a special typographical word treatment. Some identifiers are hybrid, or combinations of symbol and logotype. In order to create these identifiers, the designer must have a clear vision of the corporation or idea to be represented and of the audience to which the message is directed.

Books and Magazine Layout:

This definition is so very true, when people ask me what is Graphic Design, i never know quiet how to answer. I end up saying everything around you, which is so true. Books, magazines, Internet, any from of image and text layout. Video filming. What would we do without it, i always think that we would be back in the old ages, handwriting everything and posting it. But no designed cards, just scrappy pieces of paper. No Wallpaper, no colour, everything would be dull and lifeless.

Signs and Symbols;

Symbols, the fastest way of communicating, getting the point across with signs. You see them everyday and now i bet they are taken so for granted. Road signs, to airport and car park signs, toilet signs to hazard and Warning signs, without them there would be chaos.

Logos;

these are what we used to help distinguish one company or product from any other.

The world knows this logo, its probably the most famous.
Although it changes slightly over the years it's still well known.

Photography;

Photography. I would say that photography is something that makes up Graphic Design, it focuses on composition and layout. This which is also an important aspect within design, whether it is with image or type. This is from a site called Deviant which contains a very wider variety of work, these were a few that i was drawn to. There is no reason in particular as to why they are all black and white, these are just the ones that caught my eye.

I love this work, i have no reason for liking this work, but i do. There are so many styles within her work but i like aspects of most of them. Communicating a message in an image.

Nina Chakrabarti.
An illustrator that i stumbled across for my Visual Language. I was attracted to the detailed and very decorative, with type as a decorative tool. Working also with the quality of line and the use of layers.

Cowshed is a range of skin care products that Nina was commissioned to draw some floral patterns for the re-branding of the label. Created both very stylized to more naturalistic.

Claire studied for BA Graphic and Media design at London College of Communication. Born and bred Londoner Claire Scully takes her inspiration from her surrounding environment yet despite this location her work takes on a very organic feel as she embraces the natural world and the significance of nature within a cities surroundings. Creating whimsical landscapes, playing with scale and detail Claire’s work offers a diverse mix of media with blends of intricate hand drawing, traditional watercolour painting, photography, digital artwork, 3D wooden bird boxes and furniture.

Banksy

Banksy Graffiti work, most famous graffiti artist i know and i think is the most recognisable. I really like some of his work. These pieces especially. I think that this is for fun, but there is a resemblance in this and to everything else. It is communication through image, and this i think is really interesting.

These i found on the websites that was recommended to us, and i love the work that was on there. These i think summed it up. Also the few here relate well to my current project of typography related to a year, this in the form of a calendar. I need to find an appropriate font that sums up the general vibe of the year.
These all have a different feel about them i i wanted to show how these work. Different surfaces effect the feel and style of the font, and what it suggests.
A whole type face. But i like the uniformity and how they have been placed together. This was an eye catching aspect for me.

Although this is unrelated to the work above, this is something i found and found really quirky. This is just something i would have never have thought of. I need to get into this frame of mind for this current project.

For a project we had to advertise the release of our book using an appropriate method. I just wanted to include these as i thought that they were ok. They did the job they set out to do.

Within the last 6 or so weeks for visual language i produced a range of work. I found that once i managed to define my aim i developed a passion for this brief, my brief became the break down of objects and how when separated they became a line. For example a bag, once the contense was emptied i drew them in a line. This is a sample of some of my work, this i am really proud of. This the initial drawing of one of my deconstructed objects and its items.

Afer i had drawn the objects i experimented with papers, layouts and styles of design. These became really interesting once they were built up.
For another experiment i manipulated the images onto a black sketch book, focusing on silhouettes and i the contrast between the object and the items that was inside it. The break down. These too i tried to change and keep varied. This to me kept it interesting. After i had done this i moved onto more objects, the other one which worked out really well was the fridge and its contense. This time i manipulated it vis computer. This producing more different range of outcomes. I think that this is what kept it interesting. I aimed to create a wide range of varieties and experiment with everything i thought would work well. Some even that i thought wouldn't.

More Fridge related work, this time putting the fridge and items together. This allowed me to work more with compositions. This also worked well as there was so many options that i could try.

Once all the paper experimenting was done i referred back to cut outs, something i had experiemented with within the first few months but never brought back up. However once i tried i found that it created really nice quality pieces. I experiemented with a variety of methods to cut out. I have chosen two of the best. The two below being the examples.
These took a long time to do, and to me they seem worth it. They work really well and proved to be popular during crits.
However as the project came to a finish i decided that i wanted a book or a piece that could sum up the work i had been doing over the months. I decided to create a book that was cut out as this i thought would be the most interesting and work the best. I chose to do the contense of the bag and i cut out the center of the bag so that it was clear that the rest of the cut outs had come out of it, and cut the rest out ad made them really visually interesting.
Over all i am pleased with the outcome. And will continue in my own time to develop this further.

Last of the initial mock ups before i started to develop the final idea. I think these ideas are my best of all of them as they fit the aim and audiemce well. My aim being to educate people on greetings in other languages and encourage people to try and say hello. Audience being adults, as i found that with children being afraid to get things wrong, they just tried, and seemed to have more confidence than adults.
These are my final mock ups (not the only ones, but the ones that i think i will develop). I shown these at my final crit and got comments and feed back of using coloured pages and simpler numbering techniques on the maps. This as each book contains a map with colours and bullet points to pin point the places that each language is spoken and what page number it is on.

I have been working on type for this book of 100 recently. Looking at
past work on my blog, 27th November 2007. I looked at a website www.ni9e.com/type
really interesting work.

Also these random two images from Ikea.
I just found them funny and caught my eye.

This is my idea to date.....playing with simple for now.
Have to start somewhere i suppose.

This is my trial book, a book made out of Envelopes.
Im unsure of this design though, but we'll see with development.

This red and black idea came from a dictionary -
therefore helping adults to learn how to say hello
to a foreign person. My next idea was to turn this
into a book.

This being that my aim is to teach people - adults, to say hello to foreign people, and not hold back as they feel they can't pronounce the word. This is why I'm thinking of creating a book of 100 ways to say hello as a dictionary, as it's a learning book, and relates well to my subject.

This is just another idea, i was playing around so i know its not the best video, but it is just an idea. A book...could it be a video? And could i make it interesting for 100? i dont think this is the way to go, but i like the video.

Now i have decided i am taking this project down the typography route, here are afew things that i have either found or done.

So far i have developed a sketch book of drawings of bottles in a line, infront, beside, behind and alongside each other. Just as a starting point. These are all in different media and all made more interesting by being different from the previous one. This using the techniques learnt in the class .
After developing a range of drawings i narrowed down my brief to focus more on one aspect. I came up with the break down of objects and by doing this having all the objects creating a line.
I started by looking around at my work space and drawing the object then breaking it down and drawing it again, with such things as cigarettes, pens, bottles etc..

From this i decided to take some photos, i pushed the cigarette image further by breaking it down another time. this meaning the break down of lighter and the box net.
After this i took more of other objects such as bottles, and will look further into it.

Book of 100....

After the research on greetings we got the next section
of the brief. A book of 100... mine being A book of 100
ways to say hello. At first thinkings i looked into
types of book and styles of book, and my development
based around the type of book. My first initial ideas.

"A resolution that challenges our understanding of wat a book consists of"
For this i wanted to focus on the way that greetings are kept, such as
bundels of them. This origioned from the initial research i got. I got
people to fill in the start of letter ad postcards to compare the way
that greetings change due to the format.

"At least one bound book with an appropriate form to the content"
Sewing envelopes together to form a book.

I want to take this further to look at something with more depth. I researched into
languages and regional dialects, so possibly work with them instead, as i would like to work with typography more.

This recent project have proven the best so far...
over reading week while away i decided to research 100
ways to say hello. Everything from hugs and handshakes
to languages and regional dialects...
I really enjoyed it. I went on a trip to chester and
took photos and quotes off people.

Timeline

After the research into smells, through all the research and development,
i came to this final idea. I wanted to use these two image to describe my idea.
For the timeline in which im going to produce to hold all the findings
of odours. I will create a series of timelines. Based around the air molecule
form, this as smells are in the air and give the sense of them being around us
all the time. I will create one for the good smells and the other for the bad.
This as i want to be able to view the contrast. In addition the colours will
change to two colours, one which is associated with the odours and the second
that you would associate with good smells. Brown and blue for example.
Further more have the timeline show the intensity of each smell, this will
be done by the size and shade of colour.
This might sound complicated but i think that i can make it effective.

"'Hidden Narratives', an exhibition which reveals the narrative urge in contemporary art, exploring how artists create scenarios, characters or scenes in which the viewer is encouraged to construct their own reading. Hidden Narratives features work in different media by artists including Simon Le Ruez, Zarina Bhimji, Susan Hiller and Shizuka Yokomizo, and specially commissioned pieces by Kate Allen and Sophie Lascelles." Within this exhibition i saw some really interesting work, some relevant but some that i found inspiring.
This piece is one of Sam Taylor-Wood collection. For a few years i have loved her work and for some reason seemed
a million times more effective when its hung in a large frame infront of you.

Photography is something i want to get better at, that and typography. I also found another few photographers
that cought my eye.

Nose Research

During the Christmas week i researched into odors and for this i used photography of noses. Photography is something that i have missed during this year and it seemed to be the way to further research. I chose noses because everyone has a different size or shape, and for obvious reasons such as thats how we are able to smell odors. Further more i researched into strength of smell. This being analysed by the individual, therefore is self assessed, and giving me some form of measurements, as in strong, average and weak. Post your nose and let me know your strengh of smell and i can include you, so what's yours?

Visual Studies update

This something we created during a Visual Studies lesson. Considering that i have never been amazing at drawing, something i have wished i could do. This boosted my confidence and showed me that i can draw for design when i put my mind to it. I will find a way to put this new skill into some practice. My other brief 'What is a line'. This is supporting my individual work, with the line experimenting.

In time for Christmas.

Rosa Pomer an illustrator who designs cards and all little characters...these i thought i wouls post as its nearly christmas and i thought that i would be festive. Plus the characters i rather took a like to. I would like to develop these skills to create some little characters like these, but whether or not i can remains to be seen...the first ones i do i will post for all to see.
